sunday night dinners

sorry about the unexpected blog break. i'm not sure what happened. i can tell you didn't happen: knitting. i think it is a seasonal thing; i obviously need some summer knits. the tie is going along at a nice clip. i should spend some time on it this week if i want to finish it in time for sunday. i really really want to get back to the green (plum) gable and have that finished by the time i head back into work.

anyway, the boy and i have a tradition of eating nice sunday night dinners. it is our way of winding down the weekend and gearing up for the week ahead. we usually start planning our sunday night dinners some time on saturday. we spend time gathering ingredients and choosing the right wine. it is nice.

since the wee one was born, we tend to eat later after he is down for the night (we feel very french doing so. zill would be so proud.). in the summers we used to eat up on our rooftop patio/helicopter landing pad. alas, the patio privacy screen i put up fell down repeatedly last year. i need a more permanent solution. so, our temporary solution is setting up our bistro table on our teeny back porch, pouring some wine, lighting some candles, and chowing down on some good grub.

Yum. That is a wonderful ritual. And the food looks delish.

It sounds familiar. Oh, how wonderful it would be if we were neighbours. Not that we'd intrude on the Sunday dinners, but we'd add Friday after work cocktails and hors d'hoeuvres to the mix. Or impromptu Wednesday drop-in BBQs (or chili, depending on the season).

No progress on the Green Goblin, either. Alas, frisbee has started. Upcoming week at the cottage should see it through to completion though.

you guys would be welcome to the sunday night dinners! besides, once i am back to work i think we need to open up the sunday night dinners to the grandmothers so they get a weekly dose of baby j.

are you going to your dad's?

dinner was bbqed sole (in foil) with a mandarin orange salsa. yum!
the hor d'hoeuvers were crackers smeared with cream cheese and raspberry chipotle jam.

Is there a recipe for that? And, what kind of wine? :-) (We can have a vicarious Sunday dinner.)

We enjoyed our first at-home, kidless weekend in about two months. We filled it with fence staining and deck repairing!

for the sole:

rub the foil with a generous amount of olive oil. i rubbed some oil on the fish too for good measure. then i sprinkled on parsley, taragon, salt and pepper. i folded the foil up into a pouch and tossed it on a high heat for about 10 minutes though 7 would have been better.

for the mandarin salsa:
1 can of mandarin oranges, drained and rinsed
some red pepper, diced
some cucumber, diced
some red onion, diced
some cilantro
1 tbsp rice vinegar
salt and pepper

the wine was a inniskillin chardonay i think. we didn't make it to the liquor store in time and had to go with the wine kiosk at sobey's.

though i've been meaning to tell you, we found a bottle of that german pinot nior that we snapped up and sucked back with great pleasure. yum!
